Drivers Education
In 2008, over 5,800 people were killed in crashes involving driver distraction. (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)
One of them was Officer David Tome of the Northern Regional Police Department, who was killed while on duty along Route 15 in York County. David was a graduate of Spring Grove Area High School, a devoted husband and a father to two young children.
In October 2009, the Spring Grove Area Educational Fund held the first annual Officer David Tome Memorial 5K Race & Fun Run. For our first effort, it was a very successful event! The participants had a great time and some of our racers achieved their personal best times.
The proceeds from the event were designated to help provide methods to encourage and educate students in safe driving habits. Over $80,000 has been raised since that first race, bringing drivers’ education courses back to Spring Grove Area High School, and providing some unique learning opportunities for ALL drivers about the dangers of distracted driving.
